  This week, PAR catalogs will be hitting mailboxes. We are so excited to hear your reactions—we’ve spent the last few months hard at work to make considerable changes to our catalog. This year, we will publish two separate catalogs targeted to two different groups: schools and clinicians. The catalog you receive includes the products you are most likely to find useful. The sections of each catalog have been updated to better address your assessment needs and help you find solutions faster and easier. We’ve also made significant improvements in presentation with a more modern, clean format, and messaging that is more conversational and personal. • APA 2011

  Are you attending APA 2011? Many PAR authors will be presenting during the convention. The following are just a sample of the engaging workshops, sessions, and symposia presented by PAR authors: Lisa A. Firestone, PhD, will be presenting two CE workshops during APA 2011, “Assessing and Treating Violent Individuals” on Friday, August 5 at 8 a.m. and “Overcoming the Fear of Intimacy” on Saturday, August 6 at 8 a.m. Dr. Firestone is coauthor of the Firestone Assessment of Violent Thoughts™ (FAVT™),  the Firestone Assessment of Violent Thoughts™-Adolescent (FAVT-A™), and the Firestone Assessment of Self-Destructive Thoughts™ and Firestone Assessment of Suicide Intent™ (FAST™-FASI™). Cecil R. • Results of 2011 National Survey on Mental Health Released

  According to the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, one in five adults in the United States suffered from a mental illness in 2011. This federal government report defined mental illness as a person having a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder, and included more than 65,000 Americans aged 12 and above. The rate of mental illness was found to be twice as likely in the 18-to-25-year-old age group, close to 30 percent, than it is in those age 50 and above (about 14 percent). Furthermore, women were more likely to have suffered a mental illness than men (about 23 percent versus 16 percent). Of the 45.6 million people with a mental illness, about 11.5 million reported a serious mental illness, about 5 percent of the adult population. About 38 percent of adults with a mental illness in 2011 received treatment during the year – and about 60 percent of those with a serious mental illness sought help during that time.
